What to Do During a Medical Emergency in Karachi: A Step-by-Step Guide
The first few minutes of a medical emergency are the hardest to think clearly in. This is a general checklist to follow while help is on the way — it isn't a substitute for medical training, and the paramedics arriving will take over active care.
1. Call for help immediately
Don't wait to see if the person "gets better." Call a private ambulance service or the free 1122 emergency line right away. Every minute matters more than you think.
2. Share your exact location clearly
Give the closest landmark, road name, and any distinguishing detail (gate color, floor number, nearby shop). If you're unsure of the exact address, share your location over a phone call or WhatsApp — this is often faster and more accurate than trying to describe it.
3. Stay on the line
Dispatch may ask follow-up questions about the patient's condition. Keep your phone free and stay reachable until the ambulance arrives.
4. Don't move the patient unnecessarily
Unless the patient is in immediate danger (fire, traffic, structural collapse), avoid moving someone who may have a spinal or major injury. Let trained paramedics handle movement and positioning.
5. Note down what you can
When paramedics arrive, they'll want to know: what happened, when symptoms started, any known medical conditions, and any medications the patient takes. Jotting this down while you wait saves valuable time on arrival.
6. Clear the way
If possible, have someone wait outside or at the gate to guide the ambulance in, and clear a path for the stretcher. In dense neighborhoods, this alone can save several minutes.
The short version
- Call immediately — don't wait
- Share your exact location, ideally by phone or WhatsApp
- Stay on the line and stay reachable
- Don't move a patient with suspected major trauma
- Note symptoms, timing, and medications for the paramedics
- Send someone to guide the ambulance in
